(Aka Polystichum munitum)

One of the most common Western North American ferns — but for some reason it refuses to grow in Eastern North America.

2. Edible: In spring, with no other food available, Quileute, Makah, Klallam, Squamish, Sechelt, Haida, and other First Nations roasted, peeled and ate the rhizomes [an underground stem, but not the root]. (Wikipedia)
