Named for Ruiter Stinson Sherman (1865-1941), a naturalist and surveyer who first visited Savary Island in 1892.
He eventually built a cabin on Savary where he would summer with his daughter Maud Rees Sherman. He was one of the original developers of Savary Island as a vacation resort in 1910.
