manila clam
(Aka Venerupis philippinarum)

The manila clam was introduced to the west coast from Asia in the 1930s.

Notes
1. To purge them of sand, let them sit in cold water that has had some corn meal and salt added to it for a couple of hours. I believe that oatmeal will work too.

The meals act as ruffage. If the clam eats it, it will spit it out, spitting out the sand with it.
