vritti
(Sanskrit = modifications, disturbances — literally, a whirl pool)

A yogic term denoting mental disturbances, e.g. thoughts, perceptions, and dreams. In yoga these are believed to impede enlightenment, thus the goal of yoga discipline is to silence them.

Notes
1. As defined in Sutra 1.2 of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras: yoga chitta vritti nirodha, Yoga is the silencing of the modifications of the mind.
