(Aka sutta (Pali))
A type of Indian literary composition, consisting of short aphoristic statements. They are made concise because students have to memorize them.
1. Literally, it means a thread or line that holds things together, so called because they were initially written down in books of palm leaves sewn together with thread.
2. In Jainism, the term refers to sermons given by Mahavira that are contained in the Jain Agama Sutras.
3. In Buddhism, the term refers to canonical scriptures regarded as records of the Buddha's oral teachings.
