(Sanskrit = "verses of knowledge" where rig means "praise, hymn, or spoken stanza" and veda means "knowledge.")

The oldest and most important of the Vedas, the foundational scriptures of Hinduism.

1. They were compiled between 2300 and 1200 BCE, and they consist of 1,017 hymns to various Vedic deities.
