Composed by Richard Mulcaster, this 1592 treatise was a forerunner of the first English dictionaries, such as Thomas Blount's Glossographia. For the most part, it is a guide to teaching English. However, it presents the case for using English instead of Latin as the medium for educated discourse. To promote this end, the book ends with a hard-word dictionary that puts forth standardized spellings for approximately 8000 words.
