Definition - A linguistic nativist term used by Steven Pinker to denote the one universal, deep-structure language that all humans are presumed to be born knowing: "Knowing a [specific] language, then, is knowing how to translate mentalese into strings of words and vice versa." (Pinker, Language Instinct, 1994: 73)

Quotation -
"If human beings were all born knowing a single, universal Mentalese language, one might wonder why separate human communities would have developed separate spoken language."
