(1811 – 1877) A French mathematician who specialized in celestial mechanics. He discovered that the shape of the Earth's orbit changes over thousands of years from a pronounced ellipse to a quasi-circle, then back again to an ellipse. This orbital elongation is called eccentricity, and it is caused by the gravitational pull of other planets.
