(1922 - 1995) The American scientist who founded paleo-oceanography.

In 1955 he used ocean-core analysis to assemble a record of temperature change that went back 300,000 years. He used this data to confirm that the ice ages of the past half-million years were a cyclic phenomenon, evidence that strongly supported Milutin Milankovitch's hypotheses, leading to its acceptance.
