Camp Century
Definition: A military installation high on the Greenland ice sheet where some of the first attempts at ice core drilling were made in the late 1950s and 1960s.

After 5 years of drilling, the Camp Century drill reached bedrock at a depth of 1.4K. During the process, it had brought up ice that was as much as 100,000 years old.

The story of Camp Century

This US Military video is very 1950s and has a murky quality that makes it feel like a science fiction movie. Enjoy. Note that in the video they refer to it as the Greenland ice cap, but it's actually an ice sheet.
