Definition:
(1) The parts of the earth's crust and atmosphere that are occupied by living organisms.

(2) The living organisms themselves.

Notes:
1. The word was coined by the German geologist Eduard Suess (1831–1914) from the Greek bios, life + sphaira, sphere.
